Interesting German language video about the Swedish steam locomotive strategic reserve.

Too bad there isn't a tin shed somewhere in the Midwest like the one about seven minutes into this video....

My god, that's incredible! I would have loved to have been on the team who did all that research, and finally found the locomotives.

I do have one question, though. At approximately 25:05, they show the coal in the tender, and it appears that there is a stream of water coming up from underneath the coal pile. What is that?

It looks like the sheet between the coal and water busted a hole and they used a broom handle to plug it up. I wish I was better with German still, or whatever languages they are using throughout the program.

I thought our strategic reserve steam engines were stored out in the desert in an Area 51 type location.

Only the NYC Hudsons. The Pennsy Q2's, J1's and T1's are in a quarry. The warehouse of GG1's is along the tracks in New Jersey.

Didn't Finland also save some of their steam locomotives for a "Strategic Reserve"?

The Soviets did, for a long time.

The U.S. runs one of the most successful and cost-effective strategic reserve programs for locomotives.
They have tricked nonprofit organizations into caring for the equipment.

I'm also thinking of the NP Northerns in a special side tunnel off the main line in the mountains of Montana.
