When Mark Gooch was disassembling the elevator he noticed bundles of papers hiding in the eaves. When he unrolled one of the bundles he found that the papers were actually the hand-written notes that local residents would have given to the station master when they wanted to send a telegraph. After Mark’s initial find, Montpelier Foundation researcher Tom Chapman scoured the remaining eaves for additional bundles of notes and, together with Mark’s initial find, he uncovered thousands of hand-written pieces of paper. As a result of Mark and Tom’s finds, it appears that the eaves of the depot served as a very informal filing cabinet for the station master. However, it still isn’t known why he decided to archive the notes in the building’s framing instead of burning them in his office stove and perhaps he was obligated to save the notes in case the telegraphed message did not go through. Fortunately for us, these notes were made by everyone using the telegraph at the train depot and so they amount to an unprecedented source of information on the early-20th century history of the train depot as well as the community that surrounded it.
