I think that I MAY have found a stolen piece off a displayed steam engine. Follow the attached link to eBay. Anyone that knows anything about Brass Plates from steam engines can positively identify this plate as coming off Illinois Central 2-8-2 #1518 on display in Paducah, KY. I am not an expert, but this one sure looks genuine. Perhaps it could have been removed prior to donation, but in any case I would think that the town of Paducah might like it back. Paul; I don't know if the 1518 had the cylinder Spec. plates when donated but if you don't hear from someone in Paducah right away please let me know and I'll try to get ahold of whoever is looking after the engine. This item may or may not have been stolen. It is definitely from IC 2-8-2 1518 and is a typical specification plate that IC had on their steam loco cylinders. The info on the plate gives cyl and valve diameter and stroke, the road number of the loco, and the most recent shop date at Paducah Shops. Each engine had one of these plates on each cylinder and this could have been just for engines shopped at Paducah. I'm not sure if other shops on the IC followed this same practice. Around 1960, IC had over 300 steam engines in the scrap line at Paducah plus any remaining active engines in the roundhouse. As flue times ran out, the engines were added to the scrap line. 1518 was one of the last to remain servicable so that by 1962, it was one of just a few engines left in the roundhouse. It took a couple of years to scrap all the engines. The Paducah scrap line was well known to railfans plus the IC was willing to sell any items from the scrapped engines. I personally bought a headlight with its number plate for $ 20.00. Bells were selling for $ 80.00 and whistles for $ 35.00. You could even buy a throttle lever if you wanted one. When I got my headlight (from Mountain type 2448) I was taken to a room that must have had over a hundred headlights plus lots of other goodies. So, it's possible that the plate on Ebay was purchased before IC gave (or sold) the engine to the city of Paducah. It's also possible that it was "liberated" as many fans chose to circumvent IC's sales program by raiding the un-fenced scrap lines. The Ebay seller is apparently not the individual who originally had the plate since he bought it from someone else. By the way, a friend of mine was taking photos along the IC main line in the 1970's when something in the ballast caught his eye. It was another plate like the one on Ebay from Mountain 2616, built new at Paducah in the early 1940's. It had apparently worked loose and fallen in the ballast years earlier. If you wouldn't mind, please try to see what you can turn up. Also, I noted that the dealer also had what I think is the plate above the builders plate from IC 1518. According to J.David's book the IC 1518 had 75,000 lbs tractive effort identical to this plate. To view this plate, just bring up my link and click on "view seller's other items". The young man I first talked to had no idea what I was talking about but the young woman he transferred me to said she would find out who was the caretaker and give them the information.
