The Coastal Heritage Society, which administers the Savannah roundhouse project, also looks after the remains of the CSS Georgia, a Confederate ironclad warship long sunk in the river there. A 1998 harbor deepening project had potential to threaten the remaining underwater artifact. Concurrently, the Society issued a very well written position statement as to the ship's historic importance and the need to preserve its remains. If you are part of a project that might be threatened by new construction, etc., this document would be worth reading. http://www.chsgeorgia.org/IronClad.cfm ryarger@rypn.org |

FYI one proposal getting very favorable response is adaptively reusing the old car shops building (now ruins) as the home for the remains of the GEORGIA as a sort of combination museum and conservation laboratory. The railroad museum is very supportive since the financial resources necessary to do anything meaningful with that structure are immense. It is a great potential partnership that could bring a whole new audience into the railroad museum as well. Dave irondave@bellsouth.net |

However new studies (there's always SOMEONE doing a new study, isn't there?) suggest that deepening the harbor would harm Old Fort Jackson--one of the other two museums under the CHS conglomerate. angelinanotgrimk@aol.com |
