Post subject:  Another Vanderbilt Question

Speaking of questions concerning Vanderbilt tenders, in the new Classic Trains (Spring '12) Bumping Post (pg. 90), there is a photo of Winnipeg Union Station. On the far left is a rear view of CN #6050, a 4-8-2. There is a pipe that runs horizonally on an angle just under the back-up light and joins a vertical pipe that comes off another horizontal pipe coming from the rear of the coal bunker. Anybody have an idea as to what it is? Just curious.

Without seeing the photo in question I can't give a definitive answer, but it most likely a breather for the water tank, or exhaust for the stoker engine.

A picture or scan would help as we have nothing like that on 6069....

I am including a partial scan of the photo with the subject engine on the extreme left. You will notice a pipe coming from the back of the coal bunker and running along the top of the tank, it then becomes a vertical pipe with another horizontal pipe joining from the left. Too much piping for just a stoker exaust.

CNR 6167 has a fairly elaborate stoker exhaust too. CN seems to have tried out many different arrangements on it's motive power.

Pat,

Both. They were probably built as coal burners and converted to burn oil. I notice that this class has a unique stoker engine compartment. Most engines with vanderbuilt tenders (6167, and 6069 for example) had a stoker engine compartment that was more of less flush with the rest of the tender. This class has a box shaped compartment that protrudes out of the side of the tender. So with this unique compartment arrangement, I would not be surprised to see a unique stoker exhaust arrangement as well.
