Great news that whilst away in the UK Caboose 2516 began the lifting process. She has been on the ground since 1947 and so far the lift looks good, one area of serious rot has been identified on the North East corner where a stack of cement bags lay for 30 years.
We hope to have her on display next to Car 57 at Depot days in Cheyenne on May 19th and 20th at the request of this great city, and then have her restored in time for her 100th anniversary at Depot days 2013.
Donations towards the recovery ($2000) can be sent to the Cheyenne Depot Museum 2516 fund.

Exciting days i needed another project !! (divorce papers coming ever closer)

Mike,

A good looking car to be sure. Would this class of caboose have wood bolstered trucks? Also, is the frame entirely wood or does it have steel center beams and supports?

Hi Taylor
Yes original wooden trucks but may have gained steel trucks latterly, withdrawn in 1947 she never got the UP yellow treatment which is another nice touch, no steel centre beams either, but again posibly latterly (can anyone add to this)

Lomita RR Museum (near Long Beach, CA) has a 1910-built U.P. CA-1 caboose, upgraded with steel underframe etc. Interior appears to be quite original, and might be a good source of info for U.P. 2516. http://www.lomita-rr.org/caboose.htm

I live 350+ miles north of Lomita. Perhaps someone in the Los Angeles area can help, or contact the museum directly? The trucks are a very old style (MCB passenger-car style, reminiscent of the V&T) as well as the interior, and photos of both should be helpful.

Today saw the completion of the lift and the sideways move onto the frame, all went well despite the NE corner whch is entirely detached from the side and rotten end sill. We will have to replace the East end sill. But great to see her on a level foundation for the first time, hopefully the move up the road will be completed on monday.
