Post subject: | Missing Milwaukee Road Diners |
I am searching for two missing Milwaukee Road dining cars. The first (car # 124) was sold to the Train Stop Restaurant, in Blackfoot, ID along with a WP Dome. The WP dome was sold in 1975, and so to presumably was the diner, however I can't seem to track it past here. The second (car # 125) went to a restaurant operation in Plymouth, MI with a number of other cars. She was there until at least 1978 and I can't find this car either. Any details about these cars would be great. I am presuming the cars were scrapped, but I would like to confirm this or determine there current location. All help would be appreciated. The Plymouth diner is definitely scrapped. It left Plymouth around 1980 in a bizarre hospital train composed of PM 2-8-4 No. 1223 (with its brakes bypassed with a rubber hose and a half dozen mill gons for extra braking), and a PM 50-foot auto box for the Michigan State Trust for Railway Preservation (now Steam Railroading Institute). The auto box was set out at Lansing, and the Milwaukee diner was left at Wyoming (Grand Rapids), where it sat for some time before being scrapped. It had part of one side cut out by the restaurant, which also had 1 or 2 other Milwaukee cars (coach? lounge?). The 1223 was taken for display at Grand Haven. Weirdly, en route from the State Fairgrounds at Detroit on the GTW it met GTW 4-8-4 6323 being hauled from Detroit to Union, IL. You never know what you'll see at night in Detroit.
