Alongside Route 9, Eddington, Maine. The car and building on the property are for sale. This was used as a storage building for an antique store at one time. Overall, appears to be in very good condition. Serial number PCX 4531.













Anything special about this car making it worthy of preservation?

Did some checking on the internet. The Armour Refrigerator Line owned some 2,000 steel cars built 1948-49 with ARLX reporting marks. They also leased a number of steel cars with TRAX and PCX reporting marks, and this car is apparently from that group. I can't tell for sure if she is an ice-bunker car (my guess) or an insulated box car or a mechanical refrigerator. Also, I assume the trucks and various brake components are missing underneath the car, but what about the couplers? I try to keep a list for myself of ice bunker refrigerator cars, both wood and steel bodied. I have no PCX cars on the list. However, when checking, I found a car at the National Railroad Museum up in Green Bay, Wisconsin listed as Armour Refrigerator Line with the reporting marks and car number listed as PCX 4408. Unfortunately, I cannot find a photo of the car anywhere! Maybe someone has such a photo and we could tell if the car is similar to the car there in Eddington, Maine. If so, then perhaps the car would not be unique and not worth the efforts to restore it.

In the interior photo, I think I see evaporator coils for the refrigeration system.

Yes, the coils are there, but now couplers and if brake rigging exists, it's buried under the car, so likely unworkable at best.
I have no idea of how rare such a car is these days, but like Les reported, I know of only one other in preservation. Removing her would be the big deal.

Looks very similar to the UTRX reefers which seem to clog many a museum in the midwest and upper south.

A joke at a slide show a couple years ago I visited was "Hey look, another UTRX reefer!"
