I just got back to my hotel from a steam-powered excursion from Cape Town to Simon's Town in South Africa sponsored by Atlantic Rail. Motive power was a Class 24 2-8-4 aka "Jenny" with a string of five vintage wooden(!!) open window coaches. We did track speed on a busy commuter route, with the engine running at track speed in reverse on the return trip. And to top it off, visitors were allowed to make cab visits before the trip and during the layover in Simon's Town. The southern part of this line goes right along the coast of False Bay. A full trip report will follow when I get back to the states and can download pictures, etc.

I remember, 25 years ago, asking the overseas steam photographers if they could find a SAR loco named "Linda," after my then-love. The closest any of them (pre-Internet_ could come up with was "LINDY-LOU", and I had to make do with the Ffestiniog's loco instead.

Now in 2012, it's come around full circle. My wife Jenny is dozing in the next room..........

<:-)

(I guess all I have to do now is regauge a couple C&NW, E&LS, and PRR ore cars and put them behind this loco.....)
