Does anyone out there have a copy of the "Sheffield Standpipe Repair Catalog", or ANY other info relating to one of these water columns (also called "water crane", "standpipe", etc)? This is not the "Poage" style, that's the one with the "bell-type" cap on top-- C&O had loads of them around into the 1980s, and that's what the new "Age of Steam" complex has.

The Sheffield was made by Fairbanks-Morse and has the two curved counter-weights at the back end of the spout.

I have an "AT&SF System Standards" book reproduction showing a 1937 ATSF drawing of this thing, with a good bit of info, and the above catalog is referenced in that drawing. But, would like typical pit drawings or plans, any good, dimensioned drawings of the valve and other parts, etc.

This info exists someplace, I'm sure.

Yes, we have one of these, dis-assembled, and we are planning to install it at Thomaston. Ours came from the Central Vermont to a private collector in Stamford, Ct about 1959, and we obtained it about 1992.

I'm curious on what the plan for the column is. Will it be functional for when Flagg Coal 75 makes visits, or will it be a piece of "eye candy" to add to the area around Thomaston station?

It's a bit big for FC 75. It will go about where there once was a water column in New Haven days, primarily as "yard sculpture" for now, but in the future....
