As is often the case when looking for something specific, you often run into something else that is at least as interesting as what you were looking for. This is the case here, with a collection of vintage PRR postcards: http://home.comcast.net/~VagelKeller/postcard01.htm This former Cumberland Valley structure is still around on West King Street in Martinsburg, W.Va., and like the B&O station some distance away, has been restored, though not for rail service. http://home.comcast.net/~VagelKeller/images/mburg.jpg There is a story about this restored building that may or may not be true, but it's fun anyway. . . The people in the business now in this station, shortly after the restoration job was completed, supposedly saw a number of people standing around on the platform outside. Most were at least decently dressed, and some had luggage. Some employees went out to ask what was going on. "Oh, we are waiting for the train to Washington," was the reply, at that time of day an obvious reference to Amtrak's eastbound Capitol Limited. Problem was, the Capitol stops at the B&O station. . .the line itself not only was in terrible shape and the time, but it runs north to Hagerstown, Md. and south to Winchester, Va., not east or west at all. . .the employees hoped the Amtrak passengers made it to the other station in time. . . http://home.comcast.net/~VagelKeller/images/mburg2.jpg One of the most interesting images for me--Jacks Narrows, near Mount Union and the interchange with the East Broad Top. Take a look at that picture, and tell me how much you would like to step in and watch the trains go by, behind 4-4-0s and 2-8-0s, and then to take a ride down the valley in a wooden train behind one of the high-steppers, and take note of how smooth the ride would be, thanks to the PRR's excellent maintenance in that time. . .and on another trip, to stop at Mount Union for a ride on the EBT, and check out how similar and how different it would be from what we know today. . . http://home.comcast.net/~VagelKeller/images/jacks.jpg Have fun. |
