Had a need to find a steam gauge pointer puller tool. Anyone have a spare they might want to sell?

I should have 2 of these and either Grainger or McMaster Carr sells them..

The Grainger pointer removal tool does not work. You need an old model Ashcroft "hand jack" and they sell on Ebay about once a month for between 10 and twenty five dollars including the pointer set drift and metal box. Don't pay McMaster's lunatic price. Just search for "Ashcroft hand jack or Ashcroft pointer remover" or similar search term. The old model has flat surfaces that slip under the pointer hub and is reversable for large or small pointers.

I wonder if Grainger may have changed suppliers or the style of the tool has been modified. The one I purchased from Grainger about 6 years ago "looks" like the one in their current ad and works like a charm. I wonder if it may be coming from different suppliers these days? Interesting....

When in a pinch I made one using small c-channel. Cut a slot in one side of the channel to fit around the shaft, and opposite it drilled and tapped a hole for a machine screw. hooked it under the needle and slowly tightened the screw onto the shaft end. Popped the needle off cleanly with no damage. The material has to be thin enough to fit between the needle and face and the channel must be deep enough to fit around the hub of the needle.

The new stye Ashcroft pointer jack, which is C shaped, tends to curl up the center portion of a standard pointer for a locomotive-size 6 3/4 diameter gauge face, and is harder to position correctly than the old style jack. It is designed mainly to remove little pointers from 2 and 3 inch faces or very narrow modern pointers. Another poster suggested making one, which is easy to do and can result in a superior instrument. The old style pointer looked nothing like the C shaped pointer of today.

We took the steam gages from ATSF 940 to the local jewelry store where one of the jewelers also worked on clocks. A couple of days later he called and had both of them in an envelope: no charge. What was actually removed were some stubs that remained after the glass was broken and the needles damaged/destroyed. Making new ones has been a trip
