Beautiful! I for one am glad to see a UP-painted E-unit with the proper nose door and grab irons, not to mention the lower headlight which I've always thought improved the looks of an E-unit.

Sigh... why on earth did "they" ever decide to stop manufacturing aesthetically pleasing motive power?

I'm guessing it's because angles are easier to stamp and align than beautiful compound curves. Too bad.

I've often wondered if there's any truth to the rumor that Amtrak tried to order new E-units from EMD but that the tooling had recently been destroyed. I wonder what an "E10-2" factory-powered with a 645 engine (or two) would have been like!

The photograph itself is well thought composed and thought out.
Nicely done.

"Sigh... why on earth did "they" ever decide to stop manufacturing aesthetically pleasing motive power?"

I believe a big part of the reason for the horribly ugly passenger motive power we have seen in the last 20 years or so is the copycat/"monkey see - monkey do" philosophy so prevelant in America these days. There is one individual who is responsible for the "design" of most of the passenger diesels in America today. He has even won awards for some of these awful creations. And since "The (insert name of RR or transit agency) used him on their engines, I guess we should use him to design ours" seems to be the dominant modus operandi. Too bad the men of the late, great EMD Styling Section aren't around today to help right this badly listing ship.
