A bunch of final touches by OERM volunteers is all that is needed to have UP E8 942 repaired, painted, lettered, and running great. Successful test runs have been made. She will be the only UP E-unit (F-units too for that matter) besides UP's corporate Es in full UP dress. Once she is broken in she will be available for fans to run in OERM's Run One Program (see oerm.org). Here's a couple of pictures from this morning. You are going to love the wings. There are a whole bunch of very proud museum volunteers down and over here. http://railfan44.rrpicturearchives.net/ ... id=2985674 http://railfan44.rrpicturearchives.net/ ... id=2985675 |

So beautiful. And with the nose door, and twin prime movers, just as it should be. Are you going to add those snow shields or whatever UP called them? Here is the data from Don Strack's excellent site: http://utahrails.net/all-time/all-time-18.php UP 942 Built: May 1953 Builder # 18273 Original Retirement: Sept 1972 Sold to Precision National Corp., Mount Vernon, Ill. Sold to C&NW 510 in September 1972; sold to RTA/Metra 510 on 31 December 1977; sold to Kasten Railcar Services, Edwardsville, Illinois, late 1989; sold to Pacific Rail Industries, Colton, Calif., in March 1991 for potential use on a tourist train operation; partially reconditioned by Pacific Rail during 1992; sold to Orange Empire Railway Museum, Perris, Calif., in early 1997, delivered in late June 1997 after having lead traction motor replaced by UP at Los Angeles. Yes, when CNW turned her into a head-end power unit (from a steam generator) for commuter service they reworked many things. Some we could undo. Some not within budget. She wore the Chicago RTA blue and red color scheme for a while which came through in the sanding. There is evidence she was bashed good on the fireman's side/front. Anybody have pictures? She will have a four passenger car train (all UP) for her coming out late this month. OERM has two more UP passenger cars to spiff up! The City of Perris? |

I know a couple folks on the west coast that would be delighted to help. ETA |

Excellent job! 942 is the last intact UP E8 left from what I can determine. 928 is beyond hope. So the surviving UP E9s are: 909 - in Louisianna? 912 - Privately owned(?) as NYC 4096 949 - UP 951 - UP 957 - WSOR 966B - UP? 970B - UP 9?? - P&W power car 9?? - IRM/WSOR Did I miss any? |

As a close follower of this project, I believe skirting is on the agenda for a later phase of work. I would like to think that snow shields will happen eventually, but my sense is that someone basically needs to donate money specifically for the purpose of having them fabricated. Either that, or help acquire some extra ones no one is using. I am kidding, but then again, I'm not. There have recently been photos on this very board of some UP snow shields that may be headed for an ignoble fate. While I am dreaming, throw in a dynamic break assembly with its roof hatch and fan along with a steam generator and that would fix most everything except the battery doors Metra added to the sides of the water tanks. I'd say "fuel tank," but the flanks had actually been reserved for steam generator water. The OERM crew did a lot of work within six months to reverse the aesthetic damage both Metra and time had wrought upon the engine. Many of these changes were related to the engine's later HEP system, which required a mess of additional roof fans and stamped vent louvers. The results are impressive and commendable. OERM had been cranking out some stunning restoration and repainting work in the last several years. UP Pullman National Scene was also painted back into the yellow and grey in a simultaneous project. I think it is the only truly lightweight UP car in OERM's collection as the others are either converted heavyweights, or just heavyweights. |

Was the steam generator reinstalled, or was the HEP retained? |

Alexander D. Mitchell IV wrote: Was the steam generator reinstalled, or was the HEP retained? Neither. We don't need steam heat in SoCal (and it's a pain in the butt plus the batteries are still in the water tanks -- CNW moved them there when they installed the HEP). And HEP was not prototypical. Come see! |

The Providence and Worcester E9B is 668. I remember how shiny it was way back in the day... Anywho, here's a picture I took at the engine house. One of the mechanics was kind enough to show me around the outside. The mechanic invited me to come back on Sunday, but this hip new thing called a "hurricane" took New England by storm (I know, really corny)
