| Post subject: | Fill Completion makes room for future display facility- RMEO |
The Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario has finally completed a multi- year project, filling approximately five acres of low land which will house our future display buildings. http://public.fotki.com/elliottd/sfrmeo/fill-for-future-tra/ The project, which consumed over 1500 truckloads of rock, concrete and brick rubble, and soil, began in October 2004 and was officially completed 18 April, 2012, with two days of bulldozer work to grade the fill to its proper level and spread fine material and soil over top. Much of this land was over twenty feet below its final elevation at the start of the project. The fill was obtained free from such projects as demolition of the old Smiths Falls hospital, construction of a new arena, water works, and warehouse, and a great deal of road construction. Our total cost has been under $10,000, mostly in bulldozer rental. No asphalt, no wood or other organic materials, and a bare minimum of metal (rebar) went into the fill. This summer, we will finally be able to connect our carshop to the mainline: http://public.fotki.com/elliottd/sfrmeo/carshop-lead/ The fun part lies ahead, construction of those badly needed buildings. Needless to say, major efforts are still ahead, but will be well worth every minute. http://public.fotki.com/elliottd/sfrmeo/site-plan-/ Steve Hunter |

Steve, I was looking at your site plan and it specifies a 100' turntable. Do you have one? |

Hi, Joe: Our request is pending approval by the CPR, so far it's looking good. Our preferred table is only a mile away and we have reasonable quotes for moving it across town. Of course, the expensive part will be the new pit. Steve |

OK, time for a quick update. The official letter arrived yesterday from Canadian Pacific, for donation of the 100' turntable from Smiths Falls, Ontario to RMEO. We anticipate moving the table in October this year, and are currently welcoming pledges, donations, etc. toward the estimated $26,800 cost of removing the table from its pit and moving it across town. Construction of a new pit and installation will be funded as part of the construction of our planned display buildings. Timing of this is unknown at this point. Another group has offered donation of the (removed) two cylinder air engine for this turntable... this is greatly appreciated. I'll give updates in a new thread as we get closer to moving day.
