Good Evening. While reading a biography on FDR it references a private car he took from Campobello to NYC after contracting polio (1921). It explains how the utmost precaution was taken when loading/unloading the crippled Roosevelt to avoid press coverage which would make the aspiring politican look weak to his potential constiuents. Does anyone have any information on the car, train numbers, etc. used in this special move? |

The move was made in Eastport, Maine, on the Maine Central. Likely the specifics of locomotive and cars has been lost to history. In the film, "Sunrise at Campobello", MEC 2-8-0 #519 was used to represent the locomotive. She was shoved by a Diesel for filming and towed back to Waterville, where she sat in the roundhouse until Spencer Miller offered her to Nelson Blount. What is known is that deception was used to get reporters to the front of the train, allowing Mr. Roosevelt to be brought on board the rear, amidst delivery of boxes of freight and luggage. |

You may or may not have read this book but it is a good read. It not only covers his funeral train in great detail but also touches on his travel before has passing. http://www.amazon.com/FDRs-Funeral-Trai ... 0230619142 |
