Dewey brothers was a very small builder of logging equipment including steam locomotives located in Goldsboro, NC. I'm looking for information on their locomotive production. Suggestions welcome for sources.

I assume that you did an internet search and probably came across this site: http://www.gearedsteam.com/other/dewey.htm

The site refers to an article in the RLHS Bullletin 112 (April, 1965) by Michael J. Dunn III. My collection doesn't go back that far and I couldn't find any other references to the Dewey Brothers. The only other thing I found on the internet was a general history of their operation.

Hope that someone has more.

Thanks, I did have that reference and a couple others, and pretty much what can be Googled.

Boring anecdotes: The dewey brothers plant still stands in Goldsboro. The company was bought out by a conglomerate in 1996, and that company kept no archives. The last principal in Goldsboro went on to another casting firm, which very recently went out of production.

The Model railroader and Live Steam articles are actually for a larger but similar Filer and Stowell lokie of the Oscillating Cylinder variety. The Dewey lokies pictured on the web are of the chain drive version.

Thanks for the posting.

Dave,

Tom Fetter's book "Logging Railroads of South Carolina", has quite a few references to Dewey locomotives, including one photo. According to Fetters, at least 14 Deweys operated in SC.

Fetters' book also refers to the Locomotive and Railway Historical Society Bulletin article and says Dewey apparently built about 74 locomotives. All were either chain drive or had oscillating cylinders.

My only entry on the Dewey Bros. is a 2-4-2RT, standard gauge, built 12-1908 Serial Number 310, for the J.B. Blades Lumber Co. It was later purchased by John L Roper, not sure which of their mills it served at.

I take that back (now that i've already typed the above message), upon looking through my SI&E roster i've one more hit on a Dewey Locomotive.

0-4-0T Serial No. 630 5 Ton Gear/chain driven loco. T. L. Smith Lumber Co. to K. A. Quarterman to Davies & Williams, Fitzpatrick, GA and last known to be owned by Caldwell & Cooley, Ellisville, MS 11/20/19

Dewey Brothers is on my list to research for a book i've been dragging my feet with over the last 3 or 4 years, I just haven't taked the initiative to look for much info on the company yet.

Thanks Jason - if I dig up anything new you are welcome to it.
