There are (2) ? ex-SR SD-40's going to scrap at a scrapper located in Cresson, PA.

Yikes. I hope some museum is able to buy and restore one of these to Southern livery.

Internet chatter is suggesting that the second unit from the right is 1580, the first N&W SD40, and there are insinuations that requests for its preservation are being made, potentially at Mad River & NKP. Lots of "thay should donate em all 2 museeums" fluff, but a serious assessment would suggest only a few good candidates as potential recipients in SR and/or N&W turf, many of whom already have some big power (N&W 1776 at Roanoke, for example) or might not really be able to handle an SD40 (SCRRM, Savannah).....

At least a Southern one should be preserved. I think NS should donate one of the 2 class units to a museum at least. Isn't the youngest Southern SD preserved an SD7 from the early 50's at the VMoT? Prime reason for a workhorse like the 3170 to go to the TVRM.

Hadn't heard anything about Bellevues Mad River & NKP wanting the #1580 ? It would be nice though as the #1580 and her sisters 81,82,83 were all Bellevue,Ohio engines for quite sometime used on the hump paired with 2 slugs.They were at Bellevue from at least 1992 when i hired out there and maybe even several years before that up until a few years back when they were replaced by some rebuilt #6100 units.In the early 1990's if they were short of power they would grab one of the 4 and send it out on the local L36 from Bellevue to South Lorain particulary the 1583 as i remember many a nights on that one! I later got to run a few of them when i was on the engineer extra board when called for the hump job.

Those high hood SD-40's were good old engines and over the years i had a few others on some road jobs on coal trains and they were good pullers.It would be nice to see a few saved somewhere even if they are stuffed and mounted.
