Does anyone know of a comprehensive history of the Pullman Company? Not focusing on the equipment (lots of those) or porters (I have most of these) but a history of the company.
My searches have not produced anything, but I may not be looking in the right places.

Many thanks.

With some of the various equipment books there may be a brief sketch of the company history -- some running to several pages. I am not aware of any corporate history, but I could be wrong.

But a few other books come to mind:
The Story of the Pullman Car, by Joseph Husband, Chicago 1917 A.C. McClurg & Co.
I believe that there was a more recent reprint of this for the railfan market.

There was an issue of Railroad History (R&LHS) that had an article about Standard Steel Car and its merger with Pullman to make Pullman-Standard. Basically, the merger was arranged to bring in the younger managers of Standard to run the combined company.

If your interested in the direction of the people who ran the company. There have been a number of biographies of George Pullman:
Palace Car Prince: A Biography of George Mortimer Pullman
George M. Pullman: Palace Car Magnate
George M. Pullman (1831-1897) and the Pullman Company

Robert Todd Lincoln served as general counsel and later was Chairman of the Pullman company. Check for biographies of Robert Lincoln.

One of the best descriptions I've seen of the separation of the sleeping car business from the construction business was in a book about Burlington streamliners. At this time, I cannot remember which book that was.

Right now that's it other than go into original source documents.
