As an addendum to the above post, here is an article I wrote about the steamboat Minnehaha and her sisters: http://theldhistory.blogspot.com/p/stre ... mmary.html
What is the rail-related content? The fleet of boats Minnehaha belonged to were called "streetcar boats"; the answer why can be found in my article!

What a beautiful sight! A parking lot turned back into a trolley line. A similar situation exists on the north side of Sacramento, where the RT Metro light rail line runs through a section reclaimed from a parking lot.

Actually it's not a reclaimed parking lot - it was part of an interchange which was going to become another freeway to bypass part of I-80. Concerned citizens advocated that the proposed bypass be used for light rail instead, and they succeeded.

I'm aware of the abandoned freeway section; the part I was referring to is near the Swanston station. The track curves through a parking lot on a route that was chosen to avoid running through a building-supply yard (one could envision a customer being warned, "Watch our for the trains running between the lumber stacks and the roofing supplies"). Alas, last time I was in that part of Sacramento, the building supply yard was out of business.
