Post subject: Former Chapters that have left NRHS?
PostPosted: Tue Dec 06, 2011 7:36 pm

Not to pile on any NRHS bashing, but I noticed in the prior thread that the former Rochester Chapter has converted to Rochester & Genesee Valley RR Museum. I know the former Beaver Valley Junction chapter converted to the Beaver-Lawrence Railway Historical Society several years ago. Are there any other chapters that left NRHS and became an independent group?

Nick

I have heard that the West Michigan Railway Historical Society has recently parted from the NRHS.

From what I've heard, the West Michigan Chapter was down to about a dozen members, a few of whom I think know, and they haven't done anything meaningful in years, if not longer.

Has anyone heard anything different?

The Ontario & Western Chapter left the NRHS about a year ago.

The Arkansas Railroad Club, which was also the Little Rock Chapter - NRHS, severed its ties with the NRHS in early 2009.

It appears that there is much dissatisfaction with the NRHS among the members of the Greenville (SC) Chapter. Check out their current "Palmetto Rails" newsletter at

On the other side of that same coin, several groups have affiliated with NRHS as chapters over the last couple of years. I believe the number of chapters is either the same or slightly higher than a few years ago. Most recently, a group in Sayreville, N.J., that is restoring the last existing station on the Raritan River Rail Road joined the NRHS.

What about the Roanoak Chapter of the NRHS? I heard alot about it in my book about the old Norfolk Southern Steam Program book "Steam's Camelot" by Jim Wrinn. Is that chapter still functioning or has it left?

Matt - The Roanoke Chapter is still affiliated with the NRHS and currently has roughly 150 members. We are active in several preservation projects in the Roanoke area (the former VGN passenger station, several equipment restoration projects, assisting at the Virginia Museum of Transportation) as well as running limited excursions with the chapter's equipment and sponsored Amtrak excursions out of Roanoke each fall.

We post announcements as well as pictures of current projects on our website (http://roanokenrhs.org/) and the Mechanical Department Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/roanokenrhs)

Thanks CBQ483 because out of all the chapters of the NRHS, the Roanoke Chapter was my most favorite for what it did with all the cool events it hosted with the old Norfolk Southern Steam Program. I hope one day you people can have the new 21st Century Steam Program to get some excursions to Roanoke.

Matt, We currently have one car that has joined the "new" Steam Program so far (baggage/tool car N&W 1407) and another (N&W coach 537) that is in the process of finalizing contractual details to join TVRM's fleet. VMT's ex-"old Steam Program" auxiliary tender is currently in service with 765. Our operational equipment is frequently used for area exhibitions also. GP30 522 was used in an NS 30th anniversary photo shoot last fall, and is now at Spencer for their "Rail Day" in June, and the NS Heritage Unit gathering on July 4th. Alco T-6 # 41 powers most of the special event train rides at VMT and operates for other events in the Roanoke area. If you use the search function and look back at my posts for about the past 3 years, you can see some of the other activities we've been involved in, including our part in the rescue of the "Lost Engines of Roanoke", and equipment displays at area events.
