The box car, sans trucks, has a skirt around the bottom and a new floor. One side for women and one side for men. It sits next to the depot, now the Town Hall. Behind it is a city park and behind me are the Rio Grande Scenic (SLRG) tracks.

No seriously though... keep the trucks. Add a huge holding tank. Add freshwater tanks in the above-ceiling spaces. Add passive lighting. Add some solar panels and a battery, for ventilation and nighttime interior lighting. And a ramp that can knock down and be stowed in the "vestibule".
Now you have a portable and highly civilized bathroom to drag to your events.

It would probably have to be steps plus a wheelchair lift because as I recall the ADA limits the slope to 1:12 which means you're talking about a 50 or so foot ramp, more if run length rules mean it has to flatten out into a landing after so many feet. Everything just gets so complicated.

Even better yet with the rolling john, you can now use johnless commuter coaches and have a john car at the rear of the train.

Just remember to add end doors for the thing; might be a little clumsy for most passengers to act like characters from "Emperor of the North" or "The Polar Express" to get to the bathroom!

Funny that Tom mentions "crappers". Just yesterday, I was doing some internet research and found that the old English sanitaryware manufacturer, Thomas Crapper, is still in business. They have an interesting "Did you know" page about toilets, but don't advance the theory that the word "crap" is a derivation of "crapper". Elsewhere on the site, they do say that it was common for people to call a toilet "the crapper", however.

I mention this not only because of the historical interest, but also the amazing products they still make. I've been looking for small round basins to go into our Pullman car and was all but resigned to making fibreglass replicas, but to my amazement, Crappers make them!
Down side is they're about US$500 a pop, plus freight and possibly import duties and I need 3 of them, so unless a fairy godmother appears, I may have to do fibreglass ones after all....
But for better heeled organisations than mine, it might be a site worth putting in your favourites list.

You have to look close now because of the building built around it, but the restrooms at the Nantahala Outdoor Center in Wesser, NC are from an old boxcar. Malcolm MacNeill put them in years back. NOC ended up with them, although they do get a considerable amount of usage from the train still. They were handy for the Eastbound freight crews that end up in the hole waiting for the Westbound varnish to go by too. . .
