I'm trying to establish what sort of floor coverings would have been used in the smoking and "wet" areas of our 1901 Pullman sleeper. Whilst it's clear carpet was used in the sleeping compartment areas, I doubt it would have been practical in the other parts. I'm guessing lino, but that's all it is at this juncture. I know the floor areas of the WC and lavatory were covered in lead sheet, but don't know about the corridors. Drawings I have show the lead there but nothing's said about the corridors, so I'm guessing they were different. If anyone has come across physical or documentary evidence, I'd love to hear it. OK, this car's Australian, but similar technologies may well have been used as American cars of the same vintage. Cheers, Bob |

I would expect Linoleum... Pullman's Red and Black checkered Linoleum was pretty universal throughout the heavyweight car era here in the US. Only problem is, I don't know if it dates as far back as 1901, but it's a place to start researching. |
