Some video clips of Black 5 No. 44767, which was one of the last locomotives to have been built by London-Midland-Scotland, but entering service for British Railways; what makes this locomotive noteworthy is its application of outside Stephenson valve gear. This is a valve motion used by a road in New Jersey in the 19th century (New Jersey Transportation Company?), and I've seen footage of a Spanish 2-8-0 with this type of valve motion, but beyond that, I don't think this is something you see every day.

No. 44767 at work:

A clip of a live-steam model of this locomotive running on air; sadly, a fair amount of the footage is out of focus, but there are still some fascinating shots of that strange valve motion, in motion:

Just for fun, a slippery start, with sparks from the drivers and magnificent sound:

Have fun.

A number of older, smaller German engines have outside stephenson.

I believe the mass of the eccentrics mounted on a return crank is a problem at high speed.

I like the Black Fives. I'm not that knowledgeable on British steam, but these look like the kind of engine that goes out everyday, gets dirty and gets the job done.
They also have a great exhaust.
