I was curious if some people knew if there were some current manufacturers of "reproduction" or more like replication railroad watertank tubs done in either redwood or other woods in a tank or tub dimension of 16" x 24"? Does any company have a current e mail, website or phone #? Not looking for the bands or bottom for or a complete tub but just the the staves for one, but that would be OK if they were. A few years ago I heard that in Chama, New Mexico a water tank was replaced on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad along with some other tanks along that tourist line. Is there a modern wood tub water tank supplier? Who does that nowdays?

Jeff:

Try giving Hall-Woolford a call, they've built a few recent water tanks:

Some ten years ago, the Lomita Railroad Museum built their water tank and had construction pictures on their website. The current website (http://lomita-rr.org/Expansion.htm) refers to these pictures and directs you to "click on the water tower below and see the construction pictures" ...problem is that there is no water tank to click on. You might check with them to find the source of their staves.

Try googling "wooden wine tanks" A quick search showed two manufactures and two wine industry discussions in the first two pages (along with a number of ads for items made from recycled wooden wine tanks.

Wood, particularly redwood is still used in wineries, and they have suppliers. One listing noted that wood was still used in some chemical processes.

Big wooden tanks are still being made.

Rooftop wood water tanks are still used in New York and other cities, the dissembled tank can be transported in a elevator and assembled on the roof.

There is a "Dirty Jobs" episode on replacing one.
