Thanks for allowing 40 million dollars worth of equipment sit around for the public enjoyment when it could be out earning money.

The value of locomotives sitting still for public enjoyment? $40 million.

The value of the good will and publicity this event will bring? Priceless.

You'll be seeing this photo and others like it from this event for years to come. I'm glad that somebody at NS was smarter than the bean counters and realized this whole "Heritage Locomotives" thing was a good idea. Well done, NS, well done.

HIGHLY doubtful there was any revenue lost on account of this event. Naturally there were expenses incurred to get them there and make this happen but as regards regular railroad operations, the most one could say would be that slightly less efficient units were employed for a few days or that some older units were retired a week later than they otherwise might be. But even that's doubtful. Isn't there a miner's holiday this week?

I'm just waiting for the inevitable day, thirty-five or so years from now, when the railfans are verbally pillorying and crucifying NS or its corporate successor for not arranging for the donation of EVERY LAST ONE of these locos to museums.

Because we know that's exactly what's going to happen if they don't.

Specifically:

Tom's right. There is probably over 40 Million in hardware in that picture. When you consider the F-units and the contribution of the 21st Century Steam Program, and the fact that at one time NS figured that every day past the 4 days alotted for overhaul cost the company $10,000 just to leave an engine in the shop, NS has made more of a committment than we will every fathom.

So here is to a large coporation remembering it's history!!

Beautiful. There are a number of other shots on Facebook showing the visiting crowds. Makes me wonder how long it'll take Spencer to clean up all the foam, though......

Sincere thanks to Wick Moorman and his team for professionally using their proud heritage as both an effective PR tool and a very effective employee relations medium.

Both the diesel heritage piece and the 21st. Century Steam piece are being done first class and are producing priceless media results which are well earned and will be long lasting.

All of us who love railroading and its proud story would be well advised to take a few minutes a write Mr. Moorman a personal thank you note for his efforts.

And who knows, maybe, just maybe, the unqualified success of the campaign might encourage others to emulate this success???

Let's see, Union Pacific started out heritage Diesel units, Norfolk Southern did it in a grander style. This speaks well for corporations remembering what they are, and from where their operative base is derived. People with loyalty run railroads. As was mentioned above, it's nice to know that hasn't been lost at higher management levels. I think the last time we saw something like this was in 1976, with bi-centennial locomotives.
I'd like to see CSX pick this up as well; certainly they have a great heritage pool on which to draw.
