I'm doing some research on the Phoebe Snow and I was curious if anyone had any knowledge of the whereabouts and/or fate of the coaches. I know where the Tavern-Lounge cars and the diners are, and I know one of the coaches is in Texas and another is in Iowa. I have also heard that a coach resides in the yard in Sayre, PA, but I cannot find any information on it.

Does anyone know what happened to the rest of the coaches? I know many were sold to the D&H, but I don't know what happened after that. Any information anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

As part of the New York State funding arrangement the Phoebe coaches on the D&H went to commute service- MTA? - in New York City area after Amtrak took over D&H passenger service. Some of those, if not all, were burned and scrapped, lasting until the 1980s.

UPDATE! Per D&H Passenger Trains the Final Decade by Doug Lezette the above is true. They were burned in storage and scrapped later in Connecticut in 1985 along with original D&H coaches.

There are a few still left.

311, such as it is, exists on the Great Smoky Mountain as an open-air car:

318 is privately owned out in Field Of Dreams country, and is being restored.

325, in Milwaukee Road garb and named Buckeye Lake, is in service on the Austin Steam Train:

I believe cars 327 and 328 were part of the Coe Rail dinner trains, and were tubed out. Those cars are now in upstate New York.

And yes, a good number of the remainder went up in flames in the Bad Old Days in the bowels of Grand Central terminal.

If my information is correct, former DL&W "Phoebe Snow" coaches 315/1315 and 317/1317 are the two that went to Coe Rail and have reportedly been sold to the Medina Railroad Museum, where one assumes that they will get NYC paint. The car in Sayre, PA is reportedly #310/1310, and I have been trying to keep tabs on its situation.

One would hope that ELDCPS would get 325/1325 in some arrangement down the road, as it would be very appropriate. Out of 25 coaches, at least 3 are still intact as coaches and at least 2-3 as "gutted".... sigh.

Pleased to know someone from the ELDCPS is keeping tabs on these cars. What do you mean by "tubed out"? My railroad terminology isn't that great.

It would be nice if they got 325. One can only hope.

I'm very interested in 310. I've heard about it on various occasions, but no one seems to have any information. I'm assuming it's privately owned, but is the owner doing anything with it.

<What do you mean by "tubed out"?>

Gutted - stripped of all internal structures

I thought the 310 belonged to the Tioga Central.

They dont list it on their current roster:

http://www.tiogacentral.com/equipment.cfm

So either they no longer own it, or it's possible they do still own it, but its not listed on the roster because it is in Sayre, and not currently in use in Wellsboro..(anyone know *why* it's in Sayre?) I have seen the coach in the Sayre yard recently, its still there, and has been for several years..(not sure how long exactly..I would guess 3 to 5 years at least, maybe longer) it shows up on Bing maps:

Nice find on Bing. I've been trying to find it on Google Maps, but to no avail.

310/1310 did belong to the Tioga Central, one assumes that is still the case, though the car has been in Sayre for about a decade or more with no work done. I've been trying to determine the exact status of this car, but getting a response from GE Capital in Sayre has proven a difficult task.

The car appears to be in restorable condition. The ownership of the Tioga Central has changed, so perhaps that is a factor in this situation. A letter to the Myles Group - the new owners of the TC -about the car might be needed....
