All,

Finally getting caught up on my backlog of Photoshopping: follow the above link to the photos from my May visit to the Valley Railroad in Essex, Connecticut.

I went into the trip wanting to exploit more of a shallow depth of field, and in processing a few of the images I tried to remove some of the digital from the equipment used, giving them a look made by human, not computer. The overcast day with periods of rain played into my objective.

2-8-2 #3025 is a Chinese built SY coal burner, rebuilt after a 2008 enginehouse fire to mimic a New Haven (New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad) Class J-1 locomotive, all of which have been scrapped.

Love that Edsel – wish it were mine!

Enjoy,
Matthew

Superb work, as usual.

The trend of photo charters including a planned human element is wonderful... as are the unplanned shots of people going about the business of what it takes to run these machines.

Bravo to Mr. Lerro for making the most out of a rainy weekend.

Rob,

Could not agree with you more: over time my eye has gravitated to how man interacts with machine, regardless if it’s a staged shot or a candid. Fascinates me to no end, at times I have to remember to capture what I see with the camera as opposed to just watching.

Most wonderful photos, thank you for sharing them. Another reason why I wouldn't hesitate to own and operate a SY if I were in the business. Cheers, John.
