Good example that age doesn't make a building fail, actual construction does. There's a notion that new buildings should be tougher because they won't get a permit unless they meet tough new building codes, but Scotland disproves that.

This is a great example of professionals falling short because of following standard practice. Architects and the law say "This was an extreme case for which the architect cannot be held accountable". Which assures there's no incentive to make buildings truly robust.

In fact too much deviation from standard is prohibited. It's rather difficult to get an earth-sheltered or passive solar home approved. (insulation underneath the concrete pad? That's not how we do things in Hazzard county! Saving energy? You got something against American-made natural gas sonny?) Ever notice most tiny homes have wheels under them, that's to dodge building codes. If the Quonset hut was a new design today, it'd never be approved.
