Post subject: Imron Paint Not Bad - For Alex Mitchell

As an addendum to the earlier thread about Imron paint being bad, it should be noted that Imron is the more-or-less "official" paint of the 4449 and has been for quite some time. A baggage car is currently being painted in it and there have been no problems whatsoever. The Clackamas River--a sleeper car--has been in the same Imron paint for years and has sat outside in Oregon often without moving for great stretches of time. On the other hand, cars owned by other organizations painted in other paints have been known to deteriorate while the Imron keeps on shining.

Probably everybody on this board would choose Imron if they had the infrastructure to apply it properly and according to environmental regulations and experienced painters to shoot it. It is unquestionably a long lasting, high quality product under those circumstances. Its use presents some serious challenges to those not blessed with experienced painters and correct equipment to do the job.

It would be tragic to see a volunteer injured through absorbtion or inhalation of the poisonous chemicals in Imron and some other automotive paints. Not a job for beginners without at least one experienced painter to assure safety as well as quality control.

Our street car #21 on the Fort Collins Municipal Railway was painted with Imron paint 18 years ago and still looks great.
