Reports indicate Norfolk Southern has started calling in to Altoona Works/Juniata Loco Shops for retirement their surviving SD38's. The fleet was part of Penn Central's 1970 order of 35, divided up between CSX and NS. Conrail had primarily used them in hump yard duty.

One former PC unit lurks on the Reading & Northern as its #2000, along with two ex-GTW units. NS also has but one SD38-2, which seems to have been rebuilt to Dash Two specs from a PC unit.
