 Post subject: Rail Group Disbanding

The Western Pennsylvania Railroad Historical Society in New Castle, PA is disbanding, and the following equipment is available for sale:

five 50' friction bearing flatcars in very good condition, ex U.S. Army
U.S. Army Alco S-1 in operable condition. Needs batteries. Friction bearing.
Industrial Brownhoist 250 ton wrecking derrick, roller bearing, no hooks. Originally steam powered, converted to diesel with low hours Caterpillar engine. Ex NYC X-14
Idler car for derrick ,ex NYC Railway Post Office car cut down. In bad condition.
Conrail bay window caboose, interior restored, exterior in good condition, no rust. Roller bearing, number 21257.

Equipment is located on the New Castle Industrial Railroad, which interchanges with both CSXT and Norfolk Southern.

The group did not own the land upon which they wanted to build their rail museum on, and got kicked off.

If this is the "land" I think it is/was..... does this matter also affect the moved/rebuilt "UN" Tower?

This is why it is imperative that railroad museums -- or museums of any large outdoor objects -- own their own land.

You may have to worry about zoning, conditional land use permits, "nimbies," mortgage payments etc. but at least you won't have to worry about a landlord.

An additional throught -- maybe you could exist as a tenant, if the landlord is a historic site and you have a long-term agreement.

This is the one positive thing I can say about being part of the Lake shore Railway
assocaitiion. We own all 19 miles of our line includeing the 35 acrers inside of our wye in Wellington. It's paid for.We owe nothing on it. We are the only railway group in Ohio (501c3) that own as much property as we do. But yet no one can get along and see a bigger picture and do something about it!
What a shame! You could combine trolleyville that has to move, and a few other groups that just let stuff sit instead of operating and have a operation in line with other groups in the country. and all of this 45 minutes from cleveland and an hour and a half from Columbus, 45 minutes from Akron and canton and a little over an hour from toledo!

Bring the leaders of these groups together and do what is right for the public and the historical equipment - make it happen!

I stand a better chance of bringing peace to the middle east than to pull this off. The mentallity is not a whole lot different.When ever I mention anything close to this we end up in a big argument. Usally me tring to remind everyone of how narrow minded they are and them just laughing and making jokes which makes me want to deck them. Like I said bad blood and narrow minds. Not mine I am way open to doing things outside the box.

The land lease was in the WPRHS's name and we let the Beaver Valley Junction Chapter NRHS put the tower on the site. Now our lease is not being renewed and will be given instead to the NRHS chapter. So the tower will stay. This whole situation has alot to do with egos and personalities. The two movers and shakers of the WPRHS are myself and the founder of the group, and I now live on the other side of Ohio, work for CSX and have my other project in Youngstown. He works for NS and is also quite busy. So we just decided that it would be best to disband and not get into a big fight over all this.

Now back to the original question, who wants an Alco S1 and a low mileage wrecking derrick? :-)

The Tod Engine Foundation owns our land free and clear and we are looking to acquire a bit more for future expansion. I know all too well that not having ownership of your land is a situation to be avoided. I would even be wary of leasing from another non profit. Own it yourself or someday face the consequences.

Land in commercially viable locations is less likely to be made available at low cost to non profits since developers can raise more money for its aquisition.

Land that isn't commercially viable isn't a good place to locate a business requiring retail custom such as a railroad museum or tourist railroad.

Best thing that can happen is a supportive landowner with the right property makes the museum a nice offer that also provides tax breaks for him - like donating a few acres and a pole barn or two. Then the only problem is the universal environmental remediation thing.
