It sounds like numerous RyPN folks are coming to Harrisburg for NKP 765's sojourn to, in, and from there on August 18/19th. If we get enough interest, I will use my "beer industry" connections--no, seriously, I have them--to try and get us a table, or more, at one of two "good beer" places: Appalachian Brewing, 50 N. Cameron St. (near Harrisburg PRR station)-- www.abcbrew.com a brewpub restaurant; Al's of Hampden, west of Enola next to the I-81/Pa. 944 interchange: http://www.alsofhampden.com/ The former has more room, maybe a private room I could cop for us, and an upstairs Belgian bar on weekends; the latter is an, er, "intimate" deli/cafe that now brews in the basement and has 24 drafts and three cask beer engines, but gets crowded on weekends. Ironically, Troeg's Brewery used to be down next to Capitol wye, but recently relocated to MUCH bigger digs along the former Reading in Hershey, Pa. Roll call: Who's in? If you want to go serious enough to bring entertainment, pay a deposit on a room, do a sponsored event with NS or a magazine publisher or model maker, etc., PM or e-mail me. |

I thought you simply called for a reservation, LOL! As for Appalachian Brewing, I had dinner there a couple of years ago, and really enjoyed it. They use a stylized Rockville Viaduct as one of their logos and even offer nice polo shirts with the logo on them. |

Ever seen some of these places on a Friday or Saturday night? With Al's, we might need a shuttle bus...... I've managed an after-hours private tour of one brewpub for a rail group a few years back, and in another case I managed to get the brewer to set up a table for us back in the brewery...... |

I'm coming with a group of friends for both days. I'm in for meeting fellow preservationists. |

I may be in depending on when. I'm an advisor to a member of the crew on good eateries, so I'm hoping to accompany to make sure things go smoothly. I have to gloat a little too. I've got a stellar seat to watch her cross Rockville. I can see it from my back porch. :) I could probably round up a couple CRHS/RyPN crossovers too. Russ Russ Swinnerton - CRHS President |

+1 on Appalachian Brewing. I've been there several times over the last ~3 years. Great food and great beer in a cool old building. |

Not to kick up a little old cr*p, but for all the "real namers" out there.... Guess who I am, get a confirmation. Somethings are important enough to drop the mask a little. |

Count me as tentative, pending what night y'all choose. I feel the need to buy Supe a beer, especially a good one! Rob |

Jeff, and all, for what its worth... I haven't been there for a few years, but The HOSS's Steak & Sea House, 621 Valley View Blvd, Altoona (I-99 US/220 to 17th St, North on Valley View Blvd./Biz 220 to 7th St) USED to be decorated with RR stuff... * Preservation * of the images of PRR steam etc. Maybe someone more local could verify... (I will not be there Sunday 8-19) |

I've yet to find a local "must go" eatery in Altoona. Hoss' and the other chains are fine. Another RYPN'er taught me two things about eating out there: the Sheetz in Altoona are the best anywhere and for tracskide take out cannot be beat. But if you want a seat, Vito's in Cresson is good Italian... very casual and almost "Jersey" good. Rob |

I'd be interested in joining you guys. Can someone PM me with info on where to meet up? Also, I'm working all month in Cumberland Maryland, and my room has an extra bed if someone needs it. Might be able to get a roll in bed too for a night or so if there's more than one person. Just ask. Brian Hebert |

Hello, As I recall back in the 80's, during or after K4 rebuild #1....I believe was advised by Mr. Laepple of fast food being called "Death in a Bag".......wise words from a railway Jedi Master. Was I told these words of wisdom in Tyrone??? Oh so long ago! My word yes, Sheetz wraps are very very good....roast beef especially..... better than McD's :-< Regards, Randy |
