Tom,

You are correct. After spending a couple of days getting the 9206 ready for interchange, you get pretty dirty. So after the restoration efforts come the cleanup efforts, of clothes and self.

The 9206 was built for the PRR in April of 1949. The unit is in relatively good shape for being over 60 years old -- ¬ far, far better shape than LV 112.

The unit worked at Bethlehem steel as # 70 and as luck would have it, one of BRW’s long time members worked on that unit when it was there, so he is excited about getting re-acquainted with the old gal.

I believe 9206 went from the PRR right to Beth steel and she spent much of her PRR career in Chicago.

Like LV112, the PRR 9206 will pull passenger trains on the BRW.

PS. You haven’t lived until you’ve squirmed on your back in the less than 12 inches between a greasy fuel tank and a dirt-covered track to get to the #2 and #3 axles to insulate and tie up the traction motor leads. Can you say “dirty job”?

Thanks for the follow up Scott. I'm a big fan of the SW-1 class and have gotten to be a big fan of the McHugh people. Please keep us posted when your not doing restoration work.

I know that W&W's 8404 is in good hand with them. I just realized that in 1980 when I started with W&W our beloved steamer number 98 was 71 years old and just this year our 8408 turned 72. Man is that making me feel old.

On Saturday, December 21, the 9206 came back to life.

After we re-sealed the power assemblies and figured out how to de-remote control the unit, 9206 belched smoke and carbon out her stack for the first time in about eight years.

After some brake adjustments and wiring fixes she loaded and moved out of the shop on her own.

There is still more wiring that needs to be fixed or replaced. The hoods have to be put back on and the glazing needs to be installed. The air compressor is acting up a little but the hard part is done with getting this PRR pup running again.

This would not have been possible without tremendous help from the usual suspects. Their support and hard work is very much appreciated.

The diesel crew at Orange Empire (oerm.org) in Perris, California has been working on SW-1 SP 1006 for several years now. As the old cowboys would say, it had been "rode hard and put away wet." Right now, job one is the newest EMD on the property, FP-45 ATSF 108, but when that's done, the oldest will have its turn.
