At the Cuero Y Salado Wildlife Refuge near La Ceiba, Honduras a small railroad exists to transport visitors around the refuge. The locomotive at the following link has long been reported to exist and to operate:

http://steamlocomotive.info/vlocomotive.cfm?Display=12059

A 2010 tourist piece said, "If you're lucky, "burra" an ancient steam locomotive will be pulling the train during your visit." Research on the internet confirms the existence of the railroad and photos showing a 36" gauge speeder pulling a trailer hauling visitors. There also exists a photo of a "passenger car" (and I use the termly VERY loosely) that is hauled by "burra" when needed.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a photo of this locomotive. Does anyone have more information, or a photo I might use for this?

Doug,

You know I'm a big fan of international steam and especially Central America. This is exciting. I too scoured the web upon reading your post and did not find a photo of the steamer but I did find these:

I also found a video of the other steam in Honduras. Maybe you could link it on her page.

Maybe it won't work out. But maybe seeing if it does will be the best adventure ever.

I was passing through there one day while serving as a missionary for my church, and I think I have a photo of the rail equipment somewhere. I'll see if I can find it and post it.
As for rail traffic, all I ever saw was one of the typical export diesels pulling an open air-type car. Honduras' rail system has, shall we say, deteriorated since trucks took over. I'll try and post some other photos when I find them.
