There were 3 steam locos associated with Station Square, the former P&LE Pittsburgh passenger station. To the west of the building sat a Porter 0-4-0T/T that allegedly came from one of the Pgh. area steel mills. When the property was sold in the 1990s, that loco went to the estate of former B&LE president Fred Okie in Sewickley, PA. along with the ex-PMcK&Y/P&OV single truck caboose. To the east of the station, in the area of the PRR Panhandle Bridge and the highway Liberty Bridge were stored ex-Mesta Machine Co. Porter 0-6-0F's 6 and 7. Those were scrapped in place in the late 1990s or early 2000's. B&LE 643 was displayed briefly at what was then the P&LE station while in transit from Greenville, PA to the Union RR shops at Monroeville. SFAIK it did not return to Station Square afterward. |

I want to say thanks to the lastish poster in the 643 thread, it shows theres a future for the engine and possibilities, we've talked it to death but we hope we've shed light. awaiting more direct news from more official sources, so I bid adieu about it. |

I'm not sure what I saw, but it wasn't the 0-6-0's. (The first steam locos I saw in actual revenue service.) It was a lot larger than those. Then again, the shot is from a distance, and I could be mistaken about it being a steam loco at all. Maybe it was something else. I seem to recall it was tarped, but it's been years since I saw the tape. |

Also stored in the vicinity of the two Porter 0-6-0Fs was a hot metal ("torpedo") car from one of the local steel mills. From a distance its rounded contour could be mistaken for the boiler of a steam loco. It was quite large. I don't think it survived the purge of rail equipment at Station Square after Forest City took over the facility c.1994. |

The hot metal car is still there as of earlier this summer, having survived a fire that burned up a couple wooden trolley bodies stored right next to it. It's got roller bearings, too, if anyone's interested... but on heavy-duty archbar trucks. |

I'm guessing this will be an unsolved mystery. I don't know where the videotape is, and even if I could find it, I no longer own an VCR... |
