Post subject:  Any Good Scrapyard Finds??
Found this little gem sitting right next to the road in a scrapyard in Waco, KY. Nearest rail is about 20 miles away with said scrapyard also having the WHOLE complete side of an L&N 100 ton hopper propped up against the side of a building.

Can't tell what vintage the car is since these army cars were built all the way between WW1 and Korea using the same designs.

Anybody know of other little scrapyard finds that are still to be had?

Thats kind of a weird car with the arched roof. I wonder if its from europe?

As far as scrap yards, there is a junkyard in Sunapee, NH that has a few items. There is at least one B&M coach there.

The Sunapee coach was originally DL&W, then B&W and the (I believe) Edaville.

Note the roof on this relic. Steel roofing, something I have used in a pinch over a bad car roof when moving indoors had to wait. Make the eve big, cover the windows, and paint the car sides. Good low cost protection for wood cars.

This car is identical to other European-style boxcars found at the naval installation in Indian Head, MD, and put up for sale as scrap earlier this year. See also:

Although I'm told they could be found stored at various military installations in the past, I've only seen them at Indian Head, and quite likely most, if not all, other bases have long since sold or scrapped such cars.

A google search for "junk yard box cars" turns up these cars in Montana.

Speaking about cars in scrapyards in Montana, here is another one:

This one (located in Butte, Montana) is kind of a mystery. Why a mystery? Well, first off, how did a Monon Railroad car end up in Butte? Second, there doesn't seem to be a Monon car #1299 on known Monon rolling stock rosters (although why would it be lettered Monon if it WASN'T Monon?). Finally, although I have done some checking over the internet, I am not quite sure what the site is where it is located (look at those vehicles surrounding it!). Sure would like to be able to pay the location a visit to see if I could find out some more info, but its a long way from Indiana!

I am pretty sure where that yard is. I think it is in the SW part of Butte on hill next to I-90 but higher than the interstate so you really can't see it too well from the highway.

While Butte is the closest big city (by Montana stadards) to me, I don't get over there very much.

Ooooooooooooooooh, yes. The last time I walked into a scrap yard, I found something railroad-related I STILL can't talk about publicly yet. (It's not in any real danger where it is, but it might be if I openly discuss it.)

There is an old Plymouth gas electric from the Lakehurst Naval Air Station sitting out front of Wade's scrap yard in Atco, NJ, where it was dropped a long long time ago. It is in horrible shape but on the positive side, if you have 8 grand, you can buy it from him.

Googling "Monon boxcar Butte" revealed a bit of information on the car:

According to the second link the car was built as a single-sheathed car, possibly a USRA car, and rebuild circa-late 1950s to its present configuration. Also, its current location appears to be Platinum Street just east of Utah Avenue.

(As a potentially-interesting note, the Sparton Corporation moved on to bigger and better fields of endeavor, and sold the Jackson, Michigan plant in 2010...)

Thanks for this info. I've actually tried the Google steet view feature and can find the car and area but the aggravating thing is that there is no name listed for the scrap yard. So no way to contact the owners. It's an interesting car that might be worthy of preservation providing the underfame is still in place.
