Post subject:  Looking for drawings of Baldwin class 10-34E 2-8-0 circa1883
We are hoping to built a model of a Northern Pacific Class F 2-8-0 which was built in 1883. So far we haven't found any drawings except a very brief one from around 1907 when they were re-boilered and made into 0-8-0s. So, now we are hoping to just find good drawings of the Baldwin class 10-34E, which would give us all the basic dimensions.

Baldwin class'.

There were many different locomotives built to the class 10-34E , even in 1883 there could be a couple of very different locomotives built within that same class 10-34E .

You will need to look it up in the Baldwin sales records (by the Baldwin CD from"Taplines": http://taplines.biz/Baldwin-Locomotive- ... 29567.aspx) and find out what "drawing" it was built to, then look up its sales order info then you are just about ready to try to locate the builders drawings.

Prepare yourself, there is a 95% chance that you will not find those drawings, or any drawings, because they probably do not exist, but most times the side elevation sheets can be located, these would be in Degolyer if they exist.

Your best bet for finding Baldwin drawings is to locate the RR archives, for the RR that bought and owned the locomotive when it was new. Those archives will most times have more info on any one specific Baldwin locomotive than the various Baldwin collections have presently.

Check SMU's collections to see if the specification order sheets have been posted yet, some have (about 30% are still not completed): http://digitalcollections.smu.edu/cdm4/ ... CISOPTR=32

This will be a long process so be patient.

What RR was it built for, delivery date, what was the Sales Order number, what gauge, and what road number did it carry when ordered and delivered?

Those answerers will help other to help you here on the forum.

May not be of huge help but there is an 1899 Alco NP Y-class 2-8-0 at the Civic Center in Butte, MT. It might provide a little direction. I believe it is the last NP 2-8-0 left.

Unfortunately, the F class is much older and very different from the Y that still exists. Also, the F is quite different from the later F-1 that came out in 1888. She's lighter, too light on her feet in fact, with a factor of adhesion of only 3.85. A real pretty engine, but not successful for what they were designed for. These were converted to class G 0-8-0 switch engines with new boilers in the early 1900's.

The F class is, hopefully, his next project. To give an idea of what his models look like, here's the latest. Tim Muir has just about finished the F-1 Class NP 2-8-0 in the 1890 appearance. I am a beta tester.

He did #485, which was featured in a nice drawing in November 1958 Model Railroader. He's done several later versions, circa 1910 and 1940 appearances of other F-1 engines, with accurate modifications. This one's my favorite! I should mention, these are designed for Microsoft Train Simulator and Open Rails.
