Post subject:  Nearly Running Steam????
This struck me as interesting when I saw it on Railswap.org this evening:

"I am working with an owner of a nearly running steam locomotive, that would like to sell or maybe lease it to a group that can prove they have the means to pay the payment. They will not donate it so please do not ask. There is a second loco and many extra parts and many other things to help the operation. The locomotive can be made running by next spring if someone was to move soon. The locomotive has some of the axle converted to roller bearings already. The tender will still need them changed out there on brass. Condition of both locomotives is as close to excellent as you can get for being stored. They have been well cared for and have had alot of work in the last few years."

Really? I have a couple of diesels that can "be made running next spring" if anybody would like to "prove they have the means to pay the payment". I have a completely un-educated guess as to which "tea kettle" this may be. Perhaps this explains the poor image some people have of rail preservation.

I know sumone with a neerly running wooden Pullman car, could be made mainline ready by next spring if someone wants to lease it for $7,000 a day, and i wil throw in a 100 year old cabouse too.

I am going to take a guess and say the locomotive in question is BLE 643. Some of the grammar mistakes remind me of the same ones on the FB page for 643.

The rollur bearring clue sounds like Grate Smoky Mtn.

The key clue, is "some of the axles"

GSMR 1702 had her main drivers converted to roller bearings in an ill-fated conversion attempt.

My guess is Showalter's two 4-6-2s. I believe at least one of the pair had the leading and trailing axles converted to roller bearings.

I can't remember if the 1238 was converted before leaving Ridgeley, WV or not....

All the CPR G-5s were built new with roller-bearing lead axles.

Thank You Howard.... I really should have know that, but it's been so long ago that I worked for Jack I just couldn't remember. It sucks getting old!

I'd guess Jack's engines also. 1238's trailing truck has been converted to rollers, one of our guys did the fabrication work on the boxes.

This same "seller" has advertised Alco diesels in the distant past, and I've been in touch with him in that regard. I've never gotten any real answers; it seems that it was always something like he has a friend that knows someone that MAY have units for sale.

I can't take the guy seriously, but if I have bad-mouthed a legit businessman here, well- this is an open forum and he is welcome to defend himself.
