Well, it is good to see mainline steam back in Birmingham... Former Southern Railway 630 on Saturday Sept. 15, 2012 crossing 2nd Ave. N. in Birmingham for NS employee trips to Roebuck Jct, (just east of Norris Yard in Irondale area). Next weekend Norfolk Southern is offering public excursions on Sat. and Sun., Birmingham to Wilton and Birmingham to Parish. According to the 630's crew, there are no other NS trips planned. But thats not to say there will not be some, just never know. Robert Yuill

That's a great looking 2-8-0, sounds good and appears to have benefited from the change from grease to oil in the driving boxes. Couple of us were talking about how that may have worked on 1522. |

Steam in B'ham is a beautiful thing. One would think the public excursion tickets would sell very well. I recently was able to ride and chase between Chattanooga and Cleveland. 630 looked and sounded great, especially without any helper diesels. At 40 mph, she sounds like I remember 4501 sounded when going about 55 mph. |
