Post subject:  Central of Georgia Steam Train Restoration - GA!
Central of Georgia 2-8-0 #509 (currently displayed outdoors in a park) is to be restored to service - possibly as early as 2014 in Northern Georgia on the Hartwell Railroad!

I wish them the best. What is that old saying, fast, cheap and quality, pick any two? A one year time frame with a $450,000 budget for a locomotive that has been sitting since 1956, doesn't add up. At least there is "real" railroad backing this, and that solves the 2nd biggest problem with restoring a locomotive, where to run it.

Doesn't the Hartwell group already have two steam locomotives under restoration, or have those projects either a)fizzled out or b) have yet to be started? And of the other two, isn't one that 2-8-0 from the Knox and Kane auction a few years ago?

Yeah, but I have to wonder, as NS seems to have had a very hands off aproach on steam, mostly due to the fact that I don't think they have the people and faclities to do it anymore, however they do provide fincial support to those that can do their own work, ala TVRM/FWHS. I just don't see NS handing out money and shop time to fund basket case restorations. But this is just pessimistic armchair speculation. What do I know?

What shop in Macon do they think they are going to do this work in? The CG Shops have been gone for years and NS has nothing but running repair facilities in town.

The CG shops in Savannah and the ex-Southern Pegram Shops in Atlanta are all that are left in GA. NS does still own Pegram but it is being used by a coiled steel company.

I guess they could try to use the old Pullman shops east of Atlanta on the Georgia Road, the State of GA owns those.

I still have my doubts on this project. Would love to see it happen but still seems to be a lot of gaps in their story.

That would be the Everett Railroad here in PA with B&H 2-6-0 #11 and H&BT 2-8-0 #38.


No relation to the Hartwell GA operations.

....and did anyone take notice that the ones commenting on the "restoration" of the locomotive are 3rd party ( Parks and Recreation folks?).... we all know how reliable word of mouth is.

I could have told the reporter that the engine was going to be restored by the local PBS station with the stipulation that it was to be painted purple and named Barney, and it would have been printed and taken as gospel.

Lets hear from Hartwell before speculation.

You know...if everyone is so worried about what is happening in Macon, GA...just call the Hartwell Railroad. Visit the website for Great Walton Railroad for their contact information...very easy.


Spare Me!

The ability for grown men to "what if...who's doing what...why are they doing that...I wish they did it this way...paint it that...run it here...leave it alone" apparently grows stronger on daily basis. Every organization has their own ideas for restoring "xyz" equipment from "xyz" railroad. The costs for restoring "xyz" equipment varies depending on 100 factors...and very few people on this board, if any, can tell you that cost based on photographic inspection on this board. $450,000 might be all that it required to make this engine operable.

Since apparently, many here are experts, please hop on down to Macon, GA, wave your magic wand and fix this engine. The amount of blow-hard/hot-air used on this board should provide you enough heat to get her fired up in no time.
