Grand news, close to closing out the 2012 season.

If I read the Churnet Valley Railway website correctly, it appears that they have a SECOND S160 on the property! USA #5197 made it to England from China, and is a Lima locomotive. It apparently has been run on the railroad in the past but is currently down for repairs. Recently restored 6046 was built by Baldwin, went to France near the end of the Second World War and avoided the scrapping fate of most other French S160's by being sold to Hungary. Two rather different journies for a couple of American-built S160's to say the least! Is this the only rail line world-wide to have two S160's on the roster?

It's a scan from page 60 of Britain's Railway Magazine, September 2012 issue.

Jeff -

Interesting info. However, in the list of S160 Consolidations currently in England, number 6046 was not included.

Nice job on the restoration! She sounds good. It's too bad that we can't seem to get a single S-160 running here in the states. They are great engines.

Brettcog, there is hope, see the rypn link: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=32533&hilit=alaska.

At my last unofficial count, there are at least 40 s160's still with us around the world. Some are still endangered of being scrapped. There is at least 4in danger in Greece, one in Serbia, two in Italy and at least 2 in a scrap yard in Poland. Theses are not on any preserved lists. Also, check out: http://www.railography.co.uk/info/cn_st ... es/kd6.htm for the last operating s160 in China. Have fun – Dave Notarius, London UK, ex New Hope PA

The s160's in Poland are all in museums. 2 are in Jaworzyna Slaska and the other one is in Warsaw. The 2 at Jaworzyna are in pretty rough shape, though not as bad as some of the engines there. The Tr201 is the Lima built engine, while the Tr203 is the ALCO built one. The engine in Warsaw is also a Lima built s160.

Yep, here's one of it in the roundhouse in Jaworzyna, which is where their museum is. They have about 35 steam engines, including 11 kreigsloks.

Nice Air Compressors on those Polish locomotives.

Stumped...I have seen that air compressor design with two air cylinders driven by a single steam cylinder, but I cannot recall where. Went through my collection of air pump pictures from European and Chinese locomotives and cannot find it; thinking maybe it is a Soviet design.

Hi Guys, Here's what info I have at hand on the Polish S160's:

Tr201-51 – Jaworzyna
Tr203-296 – Jaworzyna
Tr203-451 – Warszawa – Polish National Railway Museum
Tr201-61 - ZPZ Zebiec

Plus 2 unidentified S160’s without tenders (stationary boilers?) unused at a closed factory (currently looking thru records to see where) and another in poor shape missing almost all removable parts stored on the PKP (Tr 201-1xx? -also looking thru records to see where) which may have been stripped for parts for other S160 restoration projects. Thoses pumps look like a German design - Thanks - David Notarius, London UK, ex New Hope Pa

Is that compressor some sort of inline compound design, judging from the size of the cylinders? Steam at the top, LP air in the center, HP air at the bottom? It looks like it may have been developed for the closer clearances overseas, as compared to a cross-compound.

Yes, that is correct. It may be a German design of air compressor, but on a U.S. built locomotive in Poland? But that may be right, either German or Russian.

Dave N: I thought the engines at Zebiec were all long gone. Do you know otherwise?
