In response to the below thread... The former Lenzen site will be entirely occuppied by the new Caltrain maintenance facility as the three mainlines (one UPRR, two Caltrain) will be rerouted through the original roundhouse foundation site. Without a tremendouse infusion of cash, a railroad museum near or at the Lenzen site will remain a shared dream. The fairgrounds site was intially selected incorporating a replica depot and trainshed structure only. When the roundhouse, turntable, etc were added to the project's scope in 1992, the available space could not be increased due to physical constraints (private land and two roads); therefore, the museum layout become very cramped. Since the late 1990's, the overall fairground management vision changed toward other revenue generating venues. Established support continued to carry our project despite financial pressure toward an alternative use of the site. This week's Board of Supervisor's action enables exploration of other site opportunities without infringing on that existing support for our project. Although the county recinded support for a railroad museum "at the fairgrounds", they approved a large grant toward locomotive 2479's restoration. Additionally, the board agreed to assist in the relocation effort and to donate "their" locomotive to our organization in the process. Despite a misinterpretation, this short term disruption will have long term positive results. Ken Middlebrook California Trolley and Railroad Corp |
