Post subject:  New Phoebe Snow Trailer
This DL&W Phoebe Snow trailer is finally at its new home in Scranton PA. The trailer, which was on a farm in Elizabeth City, North Carolina most recently hauled cabbage racks. The trailer is in good shape and retains its original paint. The trailer was purchased by GVT earlier this year and moved to Scranton last week. We are tracking down the history of the piece now but it seems like it was purchased from the railroad, by a furniture company in the area in the late 60's or early 70's. It was later purchased by a local family and was used on their farm.

Wow, it still has the old landing gear with the rollers, haven't seen a trailer with it for quite a while.

What was with the rollers? Were trailers ever moved while grounded? I always wondered about that.

Did this one travel on its own wheels?

I'm curious to know about what years this trailer operated, and if a truck (tractor) is being concidered to display with it?
Now that would be cool!

There is a DL&W piggyback trailer flat car on hand by the owner but I do not know about a tractor.

The DL owns an early DL&W piggyback flatcar. I believe the intention is to put this trailer onto that flatcar. The DL has been putting together a collection of classic freight cars over the last few years.

Kudos for preserving and expanding the scope and context of railroad history with elbow grease and cash. It's a shame that a CNS&M pioneering piggy back flat was not preserved but than again I am even more doubtful that one, let alone two trailers could be found. Lost opportunities versus the present one as a context. It's funny how one example can open up a whole section of rail history..as a teaching tool. This brought to mid, the Chicago Great Western and their further development of intermodal service which now seems to dominate the present. The foresight of this trailer preservation will be more appreciated as time goes by. A great bit of preservation news.

MOT has the other CNS&M piggyback flat, still in its CTA paint and configuration.

I had forgotten about the IRM flat and I was unaware of the other with a CTA heritage. I think the IRM escaped my memory at the time of posting due to it's missing lock down brackets, which are a sort of bit of history themselves as a applied technology. Thanks for the clarifications. Now to find two trailers...of that era..which is probably a safer bet to be unavailable, but, based on your posts, never say never ( I guess) Quite a project that I am sure will probably never see fruition. All of this made me think of a cab to match the Lackawana trailer...Anyone for a static demonstration piece complete with ramp? Easier to think about than to pull together...a very nicely short sort of dream with a whopping price tag beyond time and energy.

Interesting you should say that. If I remember correctly the Lackawanna flat we have was used as a ramp for circus style piggyback loading. The railroad removed one truck put the other end in the dirt and loaded from that end.
