I am just back from two weeks in British Columbia.
There is a lot of interesting rail activity up there. I suggest a visit to the West Coast Railway Museum at Squamish, BC. They have a new Visitor Center which is a traditional station design.

There are several passenger cars in the Park waiting restoration. They are in use as exhibit galleries. One of them has a display on the Canadian Pacific's efforts to get immergrants to move into Western Canada.

But the treasure is a wooden Business car from the 1890s which is fully restored after work train service. The nations railroad museum's are full of such cars that will be restored "some day" it is good to see one that actually has been!

Movement within the grounds is provided by a mineature train set. you get to watch it go around a wye at the end.

The BC Rail is running a bunch of 1956 RDCs. They are in their last season of operation. Hope the museum gets one of them when they are retired. Over 50 years of operation on one line!

how about some more museum reviews for the summer traveler?

Since we're in British Columbia, I'll recommend the Nelson Electric Tramway Society (link below). Nelson, BC is one of the most isolated spots I've ever been to, but the scenery is gorgeous and the streetcar operation there is really a gem of an outfit. They've got a double-truck wood streetcar from Nelson that was completely restored from a body and runs on a couple of miles of track along the Kootenay River, along with a BC Electric Railway Birney that is being worked on. Overall, a really neat operation!

Don't miss the logging museum at Duncan on the island. Interesting railroad history on the island too which will probably disappear soon.

Take a nice drive through the Okanagan Valley and sample the wines too.

Don't pass up the chance to visit the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel at Cranbrook. It is located in the southwest corner of the Province just north of the US border and is on the CP/UP line from Calgary through to Spokane. They have some of the finest restored passenger cars to be found anywhere. Remember the article in L&RP? Well the real thing is better than the pictures. Also near Cranbrook is the steam railway at the Fort Steele Heritage Town.
Other steam operations include the Kettle Valley at Summerland in the Okanagan using the former Mayo Lumber Co. two truck shay and the new operation in Kamloops using ex-CNR #2141,a 2-8-0 recently restored to steam.
Lots of rail heritage sites in B.C. and with the US dollar being worth up to $1.40 in Canadian funds it is a real bargain too!
