OK, this is back to GE 44's... I'm looking for a particular window gasket material that looks like this. Attachment: GE44WindowGasket.png [ 52.34 KiB | Viewed 4374 times ] Also, for an NYC N7A type caboose, I'm looking for gaskets like this. I can't vouch for sure about the shape of the red piece, it might just be flat 1/8" stock with some caulk on it. Attachment: NYC-window-gasket.png [ 18.49 KiB | Viewed 4374 times ] Any ideas? I have searched the web pretty hard. |

Rob, You might want to talk to a local rubber distributor about having a die made. You can then have the stuff extruded pretty cheaply. Amortize the costs by offering the gasketing to other organizations doing similar restorations. We did that back in the late 80's for double pane to single pane coach window gaskets. |

Try Mike Hughey at Central Sales and Service in Waverly, Tennessee. They make rubber for lots of rail customers (including Amtrak). They may have a die if anyone else has had it made that you can seek permission to use (sometimes a customer that owns a die will do a die rental if they have had one made or they will sell you what you need). Die charge is in the $350 ballpark, but you then own it and control its future use, or they will send it to you if you want to keep it - won't do you much good without a rubber extrusion machine, though. Shipping back and forth could also result in damage. Once the die is made, a minimum order is around $400 worth of material (budget around $1 per foot for simple extrusions, a little more for complicated ones). You can always put ads and notices up in places like RYPN or Railswap that you have certain material available if you need to recoup some of your cost. Perhaps even get a few orders together beforehand. Lead time is about 6 weeks on average if they have to make the die, though they can sometimes do a little better than that. Wonderful people to do business with. Best, Mike BTW, if anyone needs the window gasket material for the double pane RFP/SAL/ACL style window frames usually found in Budd built cars (three pieces - a u-channel rubber for between the panes and the glazing strip on the outer edges of the inner and outer panes), please contact me.
