For those readers who are close enough to East Texas, This Saturday, November 3, the Texas State Railroad is debuting T&P #316, formerly TSR #201. #316 will be in authentic T&P livery. The charter leaves Palestine, TX at 0900 and will head to Rusk and return. There will be more than 20 run-bys, several of which will be at locations not previously used. Run-bys are planned for the newly restored trackage west of the Palestine Depot and near the Rusk Yard. This is true RARE MILEAGE. Tickets are still available at TEXASSTATERR.com Ask for the 316 photo special train, as it is not advertised on the website. |

Your topic title is a bit deceiving. Has the 316 undergone major work or just a repaint to her original appearance? |

Sorry, the engine has undergone a complete repaint and renumbering into authentic Texas and Pacific livery and a return to her original number. This will be the only time that the engine will have been run this year. |

BOY OH BOY OH BOY !!!! I sure am happy to hear this news. You even told me in time to possibly go see for myself !!! Thank you SIR. That MP caboose in Palestine, behind the shop, would sure look nice with #316, too. I know where the "newly restored trackage" must be in Pallyville, but, in Rusk ??? Everybody has most likely forgotten by now, but I have a story about our little six coupled (7 letters, two words, begins and ends with h) still sitting in the RyPN articles archives. Thanks for the Halloween treat, and you fellas watch yourselves around #201 or #316, no matter what number you paint on her cab, she's like a snake --- She'll reach out and bite you. WORK SAFE |

I remember that MP caboose from when I first began work at UP's Arlington Yard! It was there for a few months and then dissappeared only to turn up at the Rusk Facility of the TSR. We used it for locals that took to the main line for trips to Handley, downtown Atlington, Grand Prairie, etc. I was sure glad to see it wind up in good hands! |

The 316 received a new boiler a few years ago and has only been fired up a few times since then, so from an operational standpoint, she has lots of time on her, but probably abut three years of the 15 is already gone. As the only deckless cab, saturated engine on TSR she is not a crew favorite and has been used only as absolutely needed. This is the first restoration (repaint) that will see all of the engines painted in a truly historic scheme, along with an original or appropriate engine number to that scheme. |

Make that a double!!!!! More Texas State news...Went by the shop the other day and was informed that Tremont and Gulf #7 ( formerly Texas State Railroad #400 ) MAY be ready to steam by early 2013. The new backhead is being installed as we speak, new flues are in the boiler. Anything could happen, but we may have three steam locomotives up and running by mid 2013. |

Aaahhh...my favorite. They are going to start working on her in earnest next year. With a new 230 PSI welded boiler, rebuilt running gear, the old girl will be an absolute beast, better than when she left Baldwin in 1911. When she comes out, she will be ATSF 1316. Wait....I better remind them to subletter her for the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe.... |

She looks and sounds great! It's such a pleasure when an engine gets restored to the proper appearance rather than the bling and whitewalls that usually sneak their way in. Good work Mr. Knoob. |

Jeff, This here is Texas, God's country. And that being the case we're all right friendly folk in these parts. So, stopping by to jaw a bit ain't nothing. Go ahead. Just to help you along a bit, I checked the website for any service this next week and it seems they might be shut down till Easter weekend. But it still wouldn't hurt to stop in and check. If there is somebody there, they'll probably show you around. I've never been turned away in all my trips down there. Mike S. |
