I'm amazed that the cylinders got sheared off! and the report said the one train was only going like 10-12 miles per hour! The damage is incredible.

Yeah, but how fast was the other train going? Closure velocities can be downright frightening when damage occurs, even at seemingly lower speeds. I saw the immediate aftermath of two ALCO RSs doing a 'cornfield meet' in a yard when I was a kid. You know they were probably doing 5-10 MPH each and they both looked like they'd hit rock face in run 8.
