Yeah, but how fast was the other train going? Closure velocities can be downright frightening when damage occurs, even at seemingly lower speeds. I saw the immediate aftermath of two ALCO RSs doing a 'cornfield meet' in a yard when I was a kid. You know they were probably doing 5-10 MPH each and they both looked like they'd hit rock face in run 8.

It sounds like the other train may have been sitting, waiting for the train that hit it.
