The Alberta RR Museum’s xCN1392 (xCNoR1392, blt 08/1913) will be celebrating her 100th birthday in 2013. Through this winter, we are preparing her for operation and during the over-haul of the reverser, some well worn parts made their presence apparent and replacements parts need to be manufactured. Looking to attain some technical information and/or drawings on the Casey-Cavin power reverse gear used on some h-6-g 10 wheelers. Specifically the air chamber of the floating lever circuit. Have tried looking through web based archival collections (including ours) but to no avail. Lots of information on Franklin and Alco units but these CLC units are quite elusive. Any direction or help would be appreciated and will assist in rolling her out of the shop in April under her own power. Thxs Terry |

Do you have the CNR maintence Regulation book? It has some pages on repairing Casey-Cavin gear. If you need them, I can scan them for you. |

Yes thanks, I have reviewed the CNR MR's. The text quotes a drawing number, of which I don't have nor do we have in our archives. I'm hoping someone has a drw or can point me in the right direction to obtain a copy. I have also referenced the I.C.S. books from 3 different printings. Lots on Franklin and others, no Casey-Cavin info though Thxs Terry -Canadian National Railways Mechanical Department - Montreal 1944 -Maintenance Regulation No. 94d, Power Reverse Gears -Floating Lever: Reference must be made to Drw. 4H-12078 when repairing Casey-Cavin reverse gears, in connection with change to floating lever on certain classes of power |

Maybe the Ohio Central/Age of Steam guys might have some info on the gear for their own H-6-g. http://www.ageofsteamroundhouse.com/ |

Thanks Joe6167, I will follow up with this lead. Parts and pieces I can manufacture if I knew what they (missing 2 pieces) looked like. Terry |

Too bad info is in non existant. looking through CNR motive power drawings, I saw that quite a number of engines had that reverse gear. I wonder, was Casey-Cavin gear used mainly in Canada? |

It may have been a Canadian production of a product from the lower provinces made under contract, like the Macavity injector.....if so, a few photos might ring a bell with people down here. dave |

"They have the MLW archives, but not the CLC." Doesn't mean they don't have the info he's looking for. I've seen Baldwins with ALCO power reverse gear and vice-versa. You would think that Baldwin would have data on an ALCO power reverse gear if they were installing them per the customer's request. Did you search their archives for the Casey-Cavin unit and turn up empty handed? That would have been helpful to know. I have not looked so I couldn't tell you if they have it, or not. Wouldn't hurt looking. Another place to look may be Canadian Patent records. Good luck. |

The Casey-Cavin reverse gear (patented 1913) was designed by William Casey, general manager, and Gustav Cavin of the Canadian Locomotive Company (CLC) I have learned that the CLC archives ended up at Queens University in Ontario and will follow up further. Exporail inquiries are ongoing, but most of their records are MLW. Terry |
