Out of all the second generation passenger motive power - FP45 - SDP35 - SDP45 - SDP40 etc, how many survivors? As we know, there were not a lot of these built, even less still survive.... FP45 - 6 Santa Fe survivors, the other three wrecked/scrapped, MILW - all gone F45 - (Santa Fe dual service) 1 painted GN - others? SDP35 - 2 Seaboard units, 1 preserved, one still in use? SDP40 - MRL has/had one, GN/BN units MTM? SDP45 - SP units gone, GN/BN? U28CG and U30CG - Santa Fe - all gone SDP40F (Amtrak) at least one saved in Oregon - others? Anything I forgot? |

Even though the page says 1st Generation Survivors, many 2nd generations are listed in the tables. http://www.thedieselshop.us/FirstGen.HTML What are the production years for each generation? |

The one preserved at Hamlet, NC Quote: SDP40 - MRL has/had one, GN/BN units MTM? SDP45 - SP units gone, GN/BN? Erie Lackawanna 3607 still at Roanoke, probably in search of a savior, though it was never actually used for passenger service and was strictly for additional fuel capacity, as I recall. Quote: U28CG and U30CG - Santa Fe - all gone SDP40F (Amtrak) at least one saved in Oregon - others? Anything I forgot? Amtrak E60CP at RR Museum of Pa. (hey, you didn't specify diesel!); one F40PH each at Spencer N.C. and CSRM Sacramento, both rusting in back lines as I recall..... |

Yes, the CNJ-NJ DOT GP40s of 1967-68 vintage. These had squared-off long hoods, containing Vapor steam generators. Very specifically a passenger unit, not used in freight service. I think a number of these still exist on NJ Transit. Howard P. |

UP still had the former SP GP-40P's that had the longer frame, and squared off back end and straight steps. I have photos of one in SP paint with UP patches, but can't put a finger on them at the moment. I think they were used on the Biz Trains occasionally along with the SDP-45's. |

're: NJT GP 40P's-still extant, having been converted to HEP. Add to the list:(2?) F40Cs on METRA. |

Also, UP has a few SDP45s of EL heritage rebuilt as SD40M-2s. MRL should also have another SDP45 from EL but it has been rebuilt with a SD45-2 hood. (One of two done so during the EL.) This unit caused numbering confusion as you can imagine a SDP45 number on a completely outwardly appearing SD45-2. (It is an SDP45 folks.) There is a ex-SAL SDP35 running in SoCal. I think everything else has been mentioned. |

Out of curiosity, but would the eight SD70MAC's that were built for the Alaska Railroad back in 2004 count as "second generation" considering they were built with HEP inverters for the railroad's passenger services? Just a little bit of reading if anyone is interested... http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,919767 |

Erie Lackawanna 3607 is actually a plain SD45 wihich is at St Louis. The EL SDP45 at Roanoke is 3639 if I'm not mistaken. NJT still has the rebuilt CNJ GP40P's, but they have been modified on the long hood, so they don't look like they originally did. Surviving F40PH's would probably be a whole separate list, not sure how many are still around. I read somewhere that the Illinois Central was considering ordering FP45's - any truth to that story? |

There is one surviving EL GE U34CH left in the US, owned by URHS. 19 of them were shipped to Mexico by Conrail, with 5 known to have been in operation, but due to the privatization of the Mexican railroads, their status today is unclear. |

Just a little bit of reading if anyone is interested... These would be third generation, as they are computer (EM2000) controlled. As an aside, these units use one fo the traction invertors for HEP-with consequent reduction in tractive force. Sounded good on paper-but less than effective in practice. Another fleet of second generation passenger units no otherwise remarked is a group of GP-38-2's built for NdeM. DPK |

There is also the fleet of Long Island RR GP38-s and MP15AC's. 4 of the GP38s are still on the island, with the rest in Lease service. All of the MP15s remain. Some of which were converted to provide hotel power in the late 80s, but this has long since been removed. |

These locos are all plain-vanilla freight units-with minimal mods (air signal) for passenger use. DPK |

Yeah, and? How many RR's bought GP38-2s, and MP15AC's for passenger trains? They deserve there place in history as well. |

Scuttle-butt says that Buffalo Southern just lost the former LIRR C420 they were running. Apparently ruined by copper thieves? There's a real loss of a second-generation passenger locomotive. |
